IEC 62146-2:2023 is applicable to TRV capacitors used on high-voltage alternating current circuit-breakers with rated voltages above 100 kV with 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
TRV capacitors are installed phase to earth, either in parallel to the bushing on dead tank circuit-breakers, or immersed inside the circuit-breaker, or freestanding close to the circuit-breaker. Their function is to limit the transient recovery voltage (TRV) and the rate of rise of recovery voltage (RRRV) on the circuit-breaker. Capacitors in compliance with this document can be used as TRV capacitor.
This document applies to TRV capacitors falling into one or both of the following categories for:
- mounting on or close to air insulated switchgear (AIS) dead tank and live tank circuit-breakers, or
- mounting on gas insulated switchgear (GIS) circuit-breakers.
The testing for each of the above applications is in some cases different.
This document does not apply to grading capacitors installed in parallel to the chambers of the circuit-breaker, which are specified in IEC 62146-1.
This document does not apply to capacitors not directly associated with high-voltage alternating current circuit-breakers.
The object of this document is:
- to define uniform rules regarding performances, testing and rating
- to define specific safety rules
- to provide a guidance for installation and operation
The TRV capacitor is a sub-component for the circuit-breaker and is specified in accordance with the circuit-breaker specifications according to IEC 62271-1, IEC 62271-100, and if applicable to IEC 62271-203.
TRV capacitors are commonly built with composite or ceramic housings (insulators). Those insulators follow IEC 61462 or IEC 62155. Other housings can be used if they can sustain applicable type tests according to IEC 61462 and IEC 62155.
This International Standard is to be used in conjunction with IEC 62146-1:2013 and IEC 62146-1:2013/AMD1:2016.

IEC 60143-2:2012 covers protective equipment for series capacitor banks, with a size larger than 10 Mvar per phase. Protective equipment is defined as the main circuit apparatus and ancillary equipment, which are part of a series capacitor installation, but which are external to the capacitor part itself. The recommendations for the capacitor part are given in IEC 60143-1:2004. The protective equipment is mentioned in Clause 3 and 10.6 of IEC 60143-1:2004. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1994. It constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are:
- updated with respect to new and revised component standards;
- updates with respect to technology changes. Outdated technologies have been removed, i.e. series capacitors with dual self-triggered gaps. New technologies have been added, i.e. current sensors instead of current transformers;
- the testing of spark gaps has been updated to more clearly specify requirements and testing procedures. A new bypass making current test replaces the old discharge current test;
- Clause 5, Guide, has been expanded with more information about different damping circuits and series capacitor protections. Keywords: protective equipment for series capacitor banks

The main changes with respect to the previous edition are: - updated with respect to new and revised component standards; - updates with respect to technology changes. Outdated technologies have been removed, i.e. series capacitors with dual self-triggered gaps. New technologies have been added, i.e. current sensors instead of current transformers; - the testing of spark gaps has been updated to more clearly specify requirements and testing procedures. A new bypass making current test replaces the old discharge current test; - Clause 5, Guide, has been expanded with more information about different damping circuits and series capacitor protections. used connected in series with an a.c. transmission or distribution line or circuit forming part
of an a.c. power system having a frequency of 15 Hz to 60 Hz.
The primary focus of this standard is on transmission application.
The series capacitor units and banks are usually intended for high-voltage power systems.
This standard is applicable to the complete voltage range.
This standard does not apply to capacitors of the self-healing metallized dielectric type.
The following capacitors, even if connected in series with a circuit, are excluded from this
standard:
– capacitors for inductive heat-generating plants (IEC 60110-1);
– capacitors for motor applications and the like (IEC 60252 (all parts));
– capacitors to be used in power electronics circuits (IEC 61071);
– capacitors for discharge lamps (IEC 61048 and IEC 61049).
For standard types of accessories such as insulators, switches, instrument transformers,
external fuses, etc. see the pertinent IEC standard.
NOTE 1 Additional requirements for capacitors to be protected by internal fuses, as well as the requirements for
internal fuses, are found in IEC 60143-3. See also Annex C.
NOTE 2 Additional requirements for capacitors to be protected by external fuses, as well as the requirements for
external fuses, are found in Annex A and Annex C.
NOTE 3 A separate standard for series capacitor accessories (spark-gaps, varistors, discharge reactors, currentlimiting
damping reactors, damping resistors, circuit-breakers, etc.), IEC 60143-2, has been revised and was
completed in 2012. A separate standard for internal fuses for series capacitors, IEC 60143-3 has been revised and
was completed in 2013.

This part of IEC 60143 applies to internal fuses designed to isolate faulty capacitor elements,
to allow operation of the remaining parts of that capacitor unit and the bank in which the
capacitor unit is connected. Such fuses are not a substitute for a switching device such as a
circuit-breaker, or for external protection of the capacitor bank, or any part thereof.
The object of this part of IEC 60143 is:
– to formulate requirements regarding performance and testing;
– to provide a guide for coordination of fuse and bank protection.
NOTE External fuses for series capacitors are treated in IEC 60143-1:2004, Annex A: "Test requirements and

EN-IEC 62146-1 series is applicable to grading capacitors used on circuit-breakers. Their function is to control the voltage distribution across the individual interrupter units of a multi-break circuit-breaker. Grading capacitors can also be used in parallel to the interrupter unit on single break circuitbreakers to modify the Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV). The grading capacitor is a sub-component for the circuit-breaker and shall be specified in accordance with the circuit-breaker specifications. This standard applies to grading capacitors falling into one or both of the following categories for: - mounting on air-insulated circuit-breakers; - mounting on enclosed circuit-breakers (for example immersed in SF6, in oil, etc.). The testing for each of the above applications is in some cases different. The object of this standard is: - to define uniform rules regarding performances, testing and rating; - to define specific safety rules; - to provide a guidance for installation and operation.
