This document establishes a framework for the characterization of physical and chemical properties of tyre and road wear particles (TRWP) using published analytical standards. It is applicable to laboratory-generated TRWP and TRWP collected in the environment. NOTE This framework focuses primarily on published International Standards, but also includes standards published by other entities such as ASTM and AFNOR. A brief summary and justification for each standard required to characterize the physical and chemical properties of interest are provided.

This document specifies a method for the determination of low specific surface area of powders ELTs rubber by measuring the amount of physically adsorbed krypton gas and applying the theoretical multipoint Brunnauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) method.
This document defines a specific method for powders taking into account that, in order to obtain an accurate value of specific surface area, a representative sample of the material to be tested is taken according to the principle that every particle of the sample that represents the lot have an equal probability of being included in the sample.

The purpose of this Technical Report is to provide information about a procedure based on the determination of a visual index correlated with the content of textile fibers, free and bounded to the rubber, of granulates. This approach is currently used by Spanish grinders in order to control the efficiency of their processes and is effective for granulates with particle sizes whose bottom limit is higher than 0,5 mm and upper limit lower than 10 mm.

This document defines the test methods for validating the conformance of RFID enabled tyres with the minimum reading distance specifications given in ISO 20909. The two presented methodologies give comparable test results only when the same radio frequency and energy power parameters are used. Unless otherwise specified, the tests in this document are to be applied exclusively to a standalone RFID enabled tyre. This document is not intended to set any requirement on mass production quality control, nor on the frequency for testing.

This document establishes a general framework and considerations for assessing the environmental fate of tyre tread chemical additives in cured polymer and tyre and road wear particles (TRWP) throughout a tyre lifecycle. This document is applicable to laboratory-generated TRWP from cured tread polymer of known composition. Testing strategies are described for assessing the environmental fate and transport of tyre chemicals in the following processes that can occur during the tyre lifecycle: a) transformation of chemical additives in tread during tyre curing; b) transformation of chemical additives during TRWP generation (tyre use); c) transformation of chemical additives during TRWP aging and weathering; d) leaching of chemical additives and transformation products from TRWP to water; e) availability of chemical additives and transformation products from TRWP in sediment ecosystems. Mass concentrations and fractions of chemicals released or available from TRWP for the five lifecycle steps are used to estimate a) cumulative fraction of tread chemical(s) and transformation product(s) released to water, and b) cumulative fraction tread chemical(s) and transformation products(s) environmentally available.

This document specifies methods for measuring rolling resistance, under controlled laboratory conditions, for new pneumatic tyres designed primarily for use on passenger cars, trucks and buses. This document is not applicable to tyres intended for temporary use only. It includes a method for correlating measurement results to allow inter-laboratory comparisons. It is designed to facilitate international cooperation and, possibly, regulation building. Measurement of tyres using this method enables comparisons to be made between the rolling resistance of new test tyres when they are free-rolling straight ahead, in a position perpendicular to the drum outer surface, and in steady-state conditions.

This document specifies a method for the generation of tyre and road wear particles (TRWP) in a road simulator laboratory that is representative of actual driving conditions. Guidance is provided for the road simulator system, test pavement and tyres, vacuum collection system, monitoring, and reporting. This method is applicable for the collection of TRWP from a known pavement and tyre type under realistic driving conditions without the inference of road surface contaminants (i.e. brake dust, exhaust, grease, etc.). There is a possibility that this method is not relevant for studded tyres.

ISO/TS 21396:2017 specifies a method for the determination of the soil or sediment mass concentration (μg/g) of tyre and road wear particles (TRWP) in environmental samples. ISO/TS 21396:2017 establishes principles for soil or sediment sample collection, the generation of pyrolysis fragments from the sample, and the quantification of the generated polymer fragments. The quantified polymer mass is used to calculate the concentration of TRWP in soil or sediment. These quantities are expressed on a TRWP basis, which includes the mass of tyre tread and mass of road wear encrustations, and can also be expressed on a tyre rubber polymer or tyre tread basis. NOTE Tyre and road wear particles are a discrete mass of elongated particles generated at the frictional interface between the tyre and roadway surface during the service life of a tyre. The particles consist of tyre tread enriched with mineral encrustations from the roadway surface.

ISO 16392:2017 describes a test method to measure the electrical resistance of pneumatic and solid tyres, under load, on a test rig. Static charges on a vehicle sometimes need to be dissipated by way of the tyre. Electrical resistance inversely measures the ability of the tyre to dissipate static charge from the vehicle. The method specifies procedures and equipment such that electrical resistance can be accurately determined for tyres with values up to 1012 Ω. Annex A specifies the limit values in ohms (Ω) for both dissipative and conductive tyres. Annex B specifies additional conditions for measurement on a vehicle. Annex C specifies simplified test conditions for production control routine.

This International Standard specifies test methods carried out under controlled conditions for verifying the uniformity of tyres for passenger cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles. NOTE — Lack of uniformity around a tyre produces variations in forces applied by the tyre to the vehicle and this influence is repeated with each revolution of the tyre. At the present state of the art, however, it is impossible to manufacture perfectly uniform tyres. A rigid control of the complete manufacturing process can only minimise the unavoidable imperfections of materials, components and processes affecting uniformity. Methods for measuring the geometrical run-out of the tyre in both radial and lateral directions are covered, as well as methods for measuring the following parameters: -radial force variation; -lateral force variation; -ply steer; -conicity. Not all of these measurements will necessarily be relevant in every situation. This International Standard does not include methods for measuring the static and the dynamic unbalance nor methods related to tyre-wheel assemblies. The test methods specified in this International Standard are not intended for the gradation of tyres or the definition of quality levels.
