Paints and varnishes - Buchholz indentation test (ISO 2815:2003)

ISO 2815:2003 describes a method for carrying out an indentation test on a single coating or multicoat system of paint, varnish or related product, using a Buchholz indentor. The length of the indentation produced is indicative of the residual deformation of the coating.
This indentation test is not suitable for products which contain a strong plasticizer.

Beschichtungsstoffe - Eindruckversuch nach Buchholz (ISO 2815:2003)

Diese Internationale Norm beschreibt ein Verfahren zur Durchführung eines Eindruckversuches an einer einzelnen Schicht oder einem Mehrschichtsystem aus Lacken, Anstrichstoffen oder ähnlichen Beschichtungsstoffen mit einem Eindruckgerät nach Buchholz. Die entstandene Eindrucklänge zeigt bleibende Verformung der Beschichtung an.
Diese Prüfmethode ist nicht für Beschichtungsstoffe mit einer großen Elastizität geeignet.
ANMERKUNG 1   Da der Eindruckversuch, wie andere Prüfungen bei Beschichtungen, zu Ergebnissen führt, die von Zeit, Temperatur und Luftfeuchte abhängen können, werden vergleichbare Ergebnisse nur dann erhalten, wenn der Versuch unter definierten Bedingungen durchgeführt wird.
ANMERKUNG 2   Da die Eindrucktiefe von der Schichtdicke abhängt, sind die Ergebnisse für die Eindrucklänge nur dann brauchbar, wenn die Schichtdicke einen Mindestwert übersteigt (siehe Anhang A).

L'ISO 2815:2003 décrit une méthode d'essai d'indentation sur un système de peinture, vernis ou produit assimilé monocouche ou multicouches, à l'aide d'un appareil d'indentation Buchholz. La longueur de l'indentation obtenue donne une indication de la déformation résiduelle du revêtement.
Cet essai d'indentation ne convient pas pour les produits qui contiennent un fort plastifiant.

This document (EN ISO 2815:2003) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35
"Paints and varnishes" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 139 "Paints and
varnishes", the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of
an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by October 2003, and conflicting national
standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by October 2003.
This document supersedes EN ISO 2815:1998.
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of
the following countries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Czech

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

ISO 2815 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 35, Paints and varnishes, Subcommittee SC 9,
General test methods for paints and varnishes.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 2815:1973), which has been technically revised.
The main changes are as follows:
 only indentation length is now determined;
 the conversion of indentation length to indentation resistance is described in an informative annex.

1 Scope
This International Standard describes a method for carrying out an indentation test on a single coating or
multicoat system of paint, varnish or related product, using a Buchholz indentor. The length of the indentation
produced is indicative of the residual deformation of the coating.
This indentation test is not suitable for products which contain a strong plasticizer.
NOTE 1 Since the indentation test, like other physical tests on paints, gives results which can be dependent upon time,
temperature and humidity, comparable results will only be obtained if the test is carried out under well-defined conditions.
NOTE 2 Since the indentation depth depends upon the film thickness, the result obtained for the indentation length is
only valid if the coating thickness exceeds a certain minimum value (see Annex A).
