Shunt power capacitors of the non-self-healing type for a.c. systems having a rated voltage up to and including 1 kV -- Part 3: Internal fuses

Applies to internal fuses which are designed to isolate faulty capacitor elements or capacitor unit, in order to allow operation of the remaining parts of that capacitor unit and the bank. Such fuses are not a substitute for a switching device such as a circuit-breaker, or for external protection of the capacitor bank.

931-3 ã IEC:1996- 5 -INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION_________SHUNT POWER CAPACITORS OF THE NON-SELF-HEALING TYPEFOR AC SYSTEMS HAVING A RATED VOLTAGEUP TO AND INCLUDING 1 000 V –Part 3: Internal fusesFOREWORD1)The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardizationcomprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is topromote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronicfields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Theirpreparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealtwith may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizationsliaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the InternationalOrganization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between thetwo organizations.2)The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, express as nearly as possible, aninternational consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representationfrom all interested National Committees.3)The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in theform of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in thatsense.4)In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC InternationalStandards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Anydivergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearlyindicated in the latter.5)The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for anyequipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.6)Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be thesubject of patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.International Standard IEC 931-3 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 33: Powercapacitors. The text of this standard is based on the following documents:FDISReport on voting33/223/FDIS33/246/RVDFull information on the voting for the approval of this standard can be found in the report onvoting indicated in the above table.Annex A forms an integral part of this standard.Annex B is for information only. This publication, together with IEC 60871-4 (1996), cancels and replaces IEC 60593 (1977).

931-3 ã IEC:1996- 7 -SHUNT POWER CAPACITORS OF THE NON-SELF-HEALING TYPEFOR AC SYSTEMS HAVING A RATED VOLTAGEUP TO AND INCLUDING 1 000 V –Part 3: Internal fuses1 Scope and objectThis part of IEC 931 applies to internal fuses which are designed to isolate faulty capacitorelements or a capacitor unit, in order to allow operation of the remaining parts of that capacitorunit and the bank in which the capacitor unit is connected. Such fuses are not a substitute for aswitching device such as a circuit-breaker, or for external protection of the capacitor bank orany part thereof. The object of this part of IEC 931 is to formulate requirements regarding performance andtesting and to provide a guide for co-ordination of fuse protection.2 Normative referenceThe following normative document contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of IEC 931. At the time of publication, the edition indicated wasvalid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on thispart of IEC 931 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editionof the normative document indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers ofcurrently valid International Standards.IEC 931-1: 1989, Shunt power capacitors of the non-self-healing type for a.c. systems having arated voltage up to and including 1 000 V -
Part 1: General - Performance, testing and rating-
Safety requirements - Guide for installation and operationAmendment 1 (1991)3 DefinitionsFor the purpose of this part of IEC 931, the definitions of IEC 931-1 apply.4 Performance requirements4.1 GeneralThe fuse is connected in series to the element(s) which the fuse is intended to isolate if theelement(s) becomes faulty. The range of currents and voltages for the fuse is thereforedependent on the capacitor design, and in some cases also on the bank in which the fuse isconnected.

931-3 ã IEC:1996- 9 -The requirements are valid for a bank or a capacitor switched by restrike-free circuit-breakers.If the circuit-breakers are not restrike-free, other requirements shall be agreed betweenmanufacturer and purchaser. The operation of an internal fuse is in general determined by one or both of the two followingfactors:-the discharge energy from elements or units connected in parallel with the faulty elementor unit;-the power-frequency fault current.4.2 Disconnecting requirementsThe fuse shall enable the faulty element to be disconnected when electrical breakdownof elements occurs in a voltage range, in which uU1N0,92=´ is the lowest, anduU2N1,52=´ is the highest (instantaneous) value of the voltage between the terminals of theunit at the instant of fault. The u1 and u2 values are based on the voltage that may normally occur across the capacitorunit terminals at the instant of electrical breakdown of the element. The u2 value is of a transient nature and allowance has been made for damping. If the purchaser specifies u1 and u2 values other than those indicated, for example for filtercapacitors, the lower and upper test voltage limits shall be changed according to an agreementbetween manufacturer and purchaser.4.3 Withstand requirements4.3.1After operation, the fuse assembly shall withstand full element voltage or full voltagebe
