EN 13035-2:2008 (E) 5 Introduction This document is a type C standard as stated in EN ISO 12100-1. The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations and events are covered are indicated in the scope of this document. When provisions of this type C standard are different from those which are stated in type A or B standards, the provisions of this type C standard take precedence over the provisions of the other standards for equipment that has been designed and built according to the provisions of this type C standard. In this European Standard it is assumed that:  negotiation occurs between the manufacturer and the user/purchaser concerning particular conditions of use not dealt with in this standard;  stationary storage equipment with or without mobile support, mechanical handling devices (see EN 13035-1) are not intended for use outside the factory;  mobile racks and in-loader stillages can only be used on virtually horizontal grounds without significant asperities (see Clause 7).

EN 13035-2:2008 (E) 6 1 Scope 1.1 This standard contains the requirements for safety for the design and installation of equipment intended for the storage (as defined in 3.2.1), handling (as defined in 3.2.2) and transportation (as defined in 3.2.3) of flat glass outside the factory (as defined in 3.1.1) and including stillages, pallets, frails fixed to vehicles, in-loader vehicles, specific glass-securing devices, stanchions and vacuum-lifting devices which are used for road transport and on building sites. 1.2 Specific hazards due to the use inside the factory are dealt with in EN 13035-1. 1.3 This standard deals only with the devices which are directly in contact with the glass. This standard does not apply to manual handling equipment such as carrying straps and vacuum pads. Tractors, cranes, hoists and fork lifts are out of the scope as well as parts of other powered vehicles that are not in contact with the glass. This European Standard does not apply to equipment for the transport by other ways than on road e.g. by ship or train, and the transportation of glazed windows/frames. 1.4 This standard deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to equipment for the storage, handling and transportation of flat glass, when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer (see Clause 4). This standard specifies the appropriate technical measures to eliminate or reduce risks arising from the significant hazards during commissioning, the operation and maintenance. Noise has not been considered to be a significant hazard for any type of equipment in the scope of this standard. 1.5 This document is not applicable to storage, handling or transportation equipment for flat glass outside the factory, which is manufactured before the date of its publication as EN. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. 5 Safety requirements and/or protective measures 5.1 General Machinery shall comply with the safety requirements and/or protective measures of this clause. In addition, the machine shall be designed according to the principles of EN ISO 12100 for hazards relevant but not significant which are not dealt with by this document (e.g. sharp edges). For applications of a B-level standard such as EN 294, EN 953, EN 983, EN 999, EN 1037, EN 1088, EN 60204-1, EN ISO 13850 the manufacturer shall carry out an adequate risk assessment for the requirements thereof where choice is necessary.

EN 13035-2:2008 (E) 12 NOTE This specific risk assessment is part of the general risk assessment relating to the hazards not covered by this standard. 5.2 General requirements 5.2.1 Equipment shall be designed in accordance with EN ISO 12100-2:2003, 4.3 a), and shall be manufactured using materials complying with EN ISO 12100-2:2003, 4.3 b). Equipment shall comply with EN 13035-1 when applicable unless otherwise formulated in this clause. 5.2.2 Mechanical strength Moveable storage and mobile transportation equipment intended for use outside the factory shall be capable of withstanding a load of at least 1,5 times of the maximum permissible load without permanent deformation when transported by crane for speeds of less than 60 m/min. For transportation by all forms of truck for speeds less than 15 km/h where carried on forks, the equipment shall be capable of withstanding a load of at least 1,5 times of the maximum permissible load without permanent deformation. For speeds greater than 15 km/h, the equipment shall be able to withstand a force which results from the dynamic forces of 0,8 g in the driving direction (longitudinally) and 0,5 g in the perpendicular direction (laterally). If the equipment, e.g. stillages, is not able to take the forces alone, then it is necessary to give information as to how the forces can be absorbed by installing a further (additional) retaining system. 5.3 Angle of lean 5.3.1 For transportation stillages placed on horizontal ground, the angle of lean shall be at least 4°. With the vehicle placed on horizontal ground and under the most unfavourable loading conditions, frails shall have an angle of lean of at least 4°. For in-loader transport stillages, the angle of lean shall be between 4° and 5°. If the equipment has an inherent glass-retention function, such as “colliers”, pallet, the glass can be stored and transported in a vertical position. NOTE Colliers are metallic packaging devices used to store as well as to transport the glass to the customer. In the collier, the glass stays vertically so that these “colliers” can only be opened after they have been put into an inclined position, e.g. on a stillage. 5.3.2 When single plates will be taken off or on frails, a device is necessary which shows the operator that the angle of lean is maintained correctly. 5.4 Glass-retaining systems 5.4.1 Provisions shall be made for glass-retention. If retention equipment is not part of the device, appropriate instructions shall be included in the instruction handbook (see 7.3). The design of the glass-retaining devices shall ensure sufficient resistance with the glass, taking account of the glass weight to be carried and the dynamic forces which might be involved under extreme operating conditions for: i) prevention of damage to the glass; ii) prevention of damage by the glass; iii) measures against failure or unintended switching off of the retention function. 5.4.2 Appropriate solutions to retain the glass are:  hydraulic and pneumatic retention devices;  airbags/cushions;

EN 13035-2:2008 (E) 13  stanchions;  belts/straps, see Annex B (informative) for additional guidance. 5.5 Bearers and cladding materials 5.5.1 Cladding materials shall be used in order to prevent contact with any substance harder than the glass and shall be softer than the glass. All fixings shall be sufficiently countersunk below any surface likely to come in contact with the glass for avoiding such contact even at the maximum load. 5.5.2 Back bearers Cladding materials for back bearers and stanchions shall be sufficiently resilient to cushion the glass, e.g. by using rubber with shore hardness 40° to 50° A NOTE Other materials may be used, but timber on its own is not recommended. 5.5.3 Base bearers Cladding materials for base bearers shall be sufficient to resist the weight like rubber with shore hardness 70° to 80° A. To determine the area of glass support, 10 mm of support width/m² of glass-surface area shall be the minimum for glass of 2,5 mm or more. A higher value of glass support width/m² of glass area may be necessary for glass less than 2,5 mm and shall be determined by the manufacturer. NOTE i) Similar materials to those in 5.5.2 are used, but generally they will be harder; ii) EXAMPLE If the glass to be stored is 6,2 m × 3,21 m and at least 2,5 mm, the bearer width required is 200 mm (6,2 m × 3,21 m × 10 mm/m²); so if two bearers are used, each should be 100 mm wide. 5.6 Special transport systems 5.6.1 In-loader vehicle 5.6.1.1 For reversing an automatic functioning, optical or acoustical warning device in accordance with EN 981:1996 is necessary to warn the persons in the not visible area and to give the hint to leave the place behind the in-loader. 5.6.1.2 All working and maintenance places shall be reachable from floor level, or appropriate means of access in accordance with EN ISO 14122 series shall be provided. Integral lighting with illuminance level of at least of 100 Lx for working and at least of 50 Lx for maintenance places shall be provided  where foreseeable access is frequent (more than once a day);  where it can not be expected that ambient lighting at the place of use is sufficient (e.g. inside the loading area and inside on the front platform). 5.6.1.3 Around the vehicle, design shall provide for a minimum gap of 100 mm between the ground and parts of the vehicle except inside the load area and for those elements which are necessary to pick up the load for which a minimum of 50 mm is required. Measures against fall fro
