Paints, varnishes and plastics - Determination of non-volatile-matter content (ISO 3251:2019)

This document specifies a method for determining the non-volatile-matter content by mass of paints,
varnishes, binders for paints and varnishes, polymer dispersions and condensation resins such as
phenolic resins (resols, novolak solutions etc.).
The method is also applicable to formulated dispersions containing fillers, pigments and other
auxiliaries (e.g. thickeners, film-forming agents).
NOTE 1 The non-volatile-matter content of a product is not an absolute quantity but depends upon the
temperature and period of heating used for the determination. Consequently, when using this method, only
relative and not true values for non-volatile-matter content are obtained owing to solvent retention, thermal
decomposition and evaporation of low molecular mass constituents. The method is therefore primarily intended
for testing different batches of the same type of product.
NOTE 2 This method is suitable for synthetic rubber lattices, provided heating for a specific period of time is
considered appropriate (ISO 124 specifies heating until the loss in mass of a 2 g test portion following successive
periods of heating is less than 0,5 mg).
NOTE 3 In-house methods for determining non-volatile matter often include drying with infrared or
microwave radiation. Standardization of such methods is not possible, since they are not generally applicable.
Several polymer compositions tend to decompose during such treatment and therefore give incorrect results.

Dieses Dokument legt ein Verfahren zum Bestimmen des Massengehaltes an nichtflüchtigen Anteilen von Beschichtungsstoffen, Bindemitteln für Beschichtungsstoffe, Polymerdispersionen und Kondensationsharzen wie Phenolharze (Resole, Novolak Lösungen usw.) fest.
Das Verfahren ist auch auf formulierte Polymerdispersionen, die Füllstoffe, Pigmente und sonstige Hilfsstoffe (z. B. Verdickungsmittel, Filmbilde Hilfsmittel) enthalten, anwendbar.
ANMERKUNG 1   Der Gehalt an nichtflüchtigen Anteilen eines Produktes ist keine absolute Größe, sondern hängt von der bei der Prüfung angewendeten Temperatur und der Prüfdauer ab. Bei der Anwendung dieses Verfahrens werden folglich nur relative Werte und nicht die wahren Werte für den Gehalt an nichtflüchtigen Anteilen erhalten, bedingt durch Lösemittelretention, thermische Zersetzung und Verdunstung niedermolekularer Anteile. Das Verfahren ist deshalb in erster Linie für die Prüfung aufeinander folgender Lieferungen des gleichen Produktes gedacht.
ANMERKUNG 2   Dieses Verfahren ist geeignet für synthetische Kautschuklatices, wenn die Trocknung während der entsprechenden Zeitspanne als angemessen angesehen wird (ISO 124 schreibt eine Trocknungszeit vor, bei der der Masseverlust einer Probe von 2 g nach aufeinander folgenden Trocknungsintervallen weniger als 0,5 mg beträgt).
ANMERKUNG 3   Innerbetriebliche Verfahren zum Bestimmen des Gehaltes an nichtflüchtigen Anteilen schließen häufig ein Trocknen mittels Infrarot  oder Mikrowellenstrahlung ein. Die Normung solcher Verfahren ist nicht möglich, da sie nicht generell anwendbar sind. Einige Polymerzusammensetzungen neigen während eines solchen Verfahrens zu Zersetzung und liefern deshalb falsche Ergebnisse.

Le présent document spécifie une méthode de détermination de la matière non volatile en masse des peintures, des vernis, des liants pour peintures et vernis, des dispersions de polymères et des résines de condensation, comme les résines phénoliques (résols, novolaques en solution, etc.).
La méthode est également applicable aux formulations en dispersion contenant des charges, des pigments ou d'autres additifs (par exemple, des épaississeurs, des agents filmogènes).
NOTE 1    La matière non volatile d'un produit n'est pas une grandeur absolue, mais dépend de la température et de la durée de chauffage utilisée pour l'essai. Par conséquent, cette méthode ne peut donner que des valeurs relatives et non exactes pour la matière non volatile en raison de la rétention du solvant, de la décomposition thermique et de l'évaporation des constituants de faible masse moléculaire. La méthode est donc d'abord prévue pour les essais sur divers lots d'un même type de produit.
NOTE 2    Cette méthode convient pour les latex de caoutchouc synthétique, à condition que la durée de chauffage soit jugée appropriée (l'ISO 124 spécifie de chauffer jusqu'à ce que la perte de masse d'une prise d'essai de 2 g, après des chauffages successifs, soit inférieure à 0,5 mg).
NOTE 3    Les méthodes internes de détermination de la matière non volatile comprennent souvent une étape de séchage aux rayonnements infrarouges ou micro-ondes. Ces méthodes n'étant pas applicables à tous les cas, leur normalisation n'est pas possible. Plusieurs compositions de polymères ont tendance à se décomposer pendant ce traitement, ce qui fausse les résultats.

Ta dokument določa metodo za določevanje nehlapih snovi po masi barv, lakov, veziv za barve in lake, polimernih disperzijah in kondenzacijskih smolah, kot so fenolne smole (rezoli, raztopine novolak itd.).
Metoda se uporablja tudi za formulirane disperzije, ki vsebujejo polnila, pigmente in druge pomožne snovi (npr. zgoščevalce, snovi, ki tvorijo film).
OPOMBA 1: Vsebnost nehlapnih snovi v izdelku ni absolutna količina, ampak je odvisna od temperature in obdobja segrevanja, ki se uporabita pri določevanju. Pri uporabi te metode se tako pridobijo samo relativne in neprave vrednosti nehlapnih snovi zaradi zadržanja topila, toplotnega razkrajanja in izhlapevanja nizkomolekularnih sestavin. Metoda je zaradi tega namenjena predvsem preskušanju različnih serij izdelka iste vrste.
OPOMBA 2: Ta metoda je primerna za sintetične gumijaste mreže, če se segrevanje za določeno časovno obdobje šteje za ustrezno (standard ISO 124 določa segrevanje, dokler izguba mase preskusne količine 2 g po zaporednih obdobjih segrevanja ni manjša od 0,5 mg).
OPOMBA 3: Interne metode za določevanje nehlapnih snovi pogosto vključujejo sušenje z infrardečim ali mikrovalovnim sevanjem. Standardizacija takih metod ni mogoča, ker niso splošno veljavne.
Med tako obdelavo se običajno razkroji več polimernih sestavov, zaradi česar so dobljeni rezultati napačni.

This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition (ISO 3251:2008), which has been technically
revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— a general reference to ISO 4618 on terms and definitions has been added to Clause 3;
— the example of the desiccant in 4.5 has been changed to silica gel orange because the use of cobalt
chloride as indicator is no longer allowed;
— the precision data of polymer dispersions has been corrected: the figures given in the 2008 edition
were ± data which now have been converted correctly into percentages;
— the common test parameters for coating powders (powder resins) have been deleted from Table A.1
because ISO 8130-7 can be used instead;
— common test parameters for waterborne coating materials have been added to Table A.1.

Introduction
For the method to be usable for unplasticized polymer dispersions and rubber lattices, the non-volatile
residue (which consists essentially of the polymeric material and of small quantities of auxiliaries such
as emulsifiers, protective colloids, stabilizers, solvents added as film-forming agents and – especially
for rubber latex concentrate – preserving agents) has to be chemically stable under the test conditions.
For plasticized samples, the residue, by definition, normally includes the plasticizer.
ISO 3233 (all parts) specifies test methods for determining the volume of non-volatile matter in paints,
varnishes and related products.

has to be chemically stable under the test conditions. For plasticized samples, the residue, by definition,
normally includes the plasticizer.
NOTE 1 The non-volatile-matter content of a product is not an absolute quantity but depends upon the
temperature and period of heating used for the determination. Consequently, when using this method, only
relative and not true values for non-volatile-matter content are obtained owing to solvent retention, thermal
decomposition and evaporation of low molecular mass constituents. The method is therefore primarily intended
for testing different batches of the same type of product.
NOTE 2 This method is suitable for synthetic rubber latices provided heating for a specific period of time is
considered appropriate (ISO 124 specifies heating until the loss in mass of a 2 g test portion following successive
periods of heating is less than 0,5 mg).
NOTE 3 In-house methods for determining non-volatile matter often include drying with infrared or
microwave radiation. Standardization of such methods is not possible, since they are not generally applicable.
Several polymer compositions tend to decompose during such treatment and therefore give incorrect results.
ISO 3233 (all parts) specifies test methods for determining the volume of non-volatile matter in paints,
varnishes and related products.
