1.1  This European Standard establishes the requirements and tests applied to safety switching devices for limiting the pressure - here after called devices - to ensure that the maximum or minimum pressure, which is caused by a pressure generator in refrigerating systems and/or heat pumps, is maintained within the limits of the refrigerating system and/or heat pump. These devices are of special construction equipped with mechanically operated output contacts.  NOTE: Devices may be wired directly into the control circuit of the compressor or may be connected through a relay or microprocessor/computer.  Transducers/analogue devices are not covered by this standard.  If more stringent specifications for special applications are necessary, these should be agreed between the customer and the manufacturer of the devices.   1.2  Different safety and control functions can be combined in one device.   1.3  This standard does not apply to devices used for control purposes.

The standard describes methods by which reduced impact values at low temperatures may be taken into account in a safe manner.
This standard applies to the design of bodies and bonnets for pressure relief devices, including bursting disc devices, with respect to pressure containment but it does not apply to any other aspects of the design or application of pressure relief devices.

This European Standard specifies the requirements for the safety of persons and property, provides guidance for the protection of the environment and establishes procedures for the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigerating systems and the recovery of refrigerants.
The term “refrigerating system” used in this European Standard includes heat pumps.
This Part 3 of the European Standard is applicable to the installation site (plant space and services). It specifies requirements on the site for safety, which may be needed because of, but not directly connected with, the refrigerating system and its ancillary components.
This standard applies:
a)   to refrigerating systems, stationary or mobile, of all sizes except to vehicle air conditioning systems covered by a specific product standard e.g. ISO 13043;
b)   to secondary cooling or heating systems;
c)   to the location of the refrigerating systems;
d)   to replaced parts and added components after adoption of this standard if they are not identical in function and in the capacity.
Systems using refrigerants other than those listed in of !EN 378 1:2016+A1:2020", Annex E are not covered by this standard.
This standard does not apply to goods in storage.
This standard is not applicable to refrigerating systems which were manufactured before the date of its publication as a European Standard except for extensions and modifications to the system which were implemented after publication.
This standard is applicable to new refrigerating systems, extensions or modifications of already existing systems, and for existing stationary systems, being transferred to and operated on another site.

This part of EN 378 specifies the classification and selection criteria applicable to refrigerating systems. These classification and selection criteria are used in parts 2, 3 and 4.
This standard applies:
a)   to refrigerating systems, stationary or mobile, of all sizes except to vehicle air conditioning systems covered by a specific product standard e.g. ISO 13043;
b)   to secondary cooling or heating systems;
c)   to the location of the refrigerating systems;
d)   to replaced parts and added components after adoption of this standard if they are not identical in function and in the capacity;
Systems using refrigerants other than those listed in Annex E of this European Standard are not covered by this standard.
Annex C specifies how to determine the amount of refrigerant permitted in a given space, which when exceeded, requires additional protective measures to reduce the risk.
Annex E specifies criteria for safety and environmental considerations of different refrigerants used in refrigeration and air conditioning.
This standard is not applicable to refrigerating systems and heat pumps which were manufactured before the date of its publication as a European Standard except for extensions and modifications to the system which were implemented after publication.
This standard is applicable to new refrigerating systems, extensions or modifications of already existing systems, and for existing stationary systems, being transferred to and operated on another site.

This European Standard specifies the requirements for material, design, manufacturing, testing and documentation for stationary piping intended for use in refrigerating systems, heat pumps and secondary cooling and heating systems. These refrigerating systems and heat pump systems are referenced in this standard as refrigerating systems as defined in EN 378-1.
1.2   This European Standard applies to piping including welded or brazed attachments up to and including the flanges, screwed, welded or brazed connectors or to the edge to be welded or brazed at the first circumferential joint connecting piping or other elements.
1.3   This European Standard applies to the selection, application and installation of safety accessories intended to protect the piping during the various phases of the refrigeration cycle.
1.4   This European Standard applies to the following piping:
-   heat exchanger consisting of piping for the purpose of cooling or heating air where piping aspects are predominant;
-   piping incorporated into an assembly (e.g. self-contained system, condensing unit);
-   field erected piping.
1.5   This European Standard applies to piping with an internal pressure down to – 1 bar, to account for the evacuation of the piping prior to charging with refrigerant.
1.6   This European Standard applies to both the mechanical loading conditions and thermal conditions as defined in EN 13480-3 associated with refrigerating systems. It applies to piping subject to the maximum allowable temperatures for which nominal design stresses for materials are derived using prEN 14276-1 or as specified in this European Standard. In addition piping designed to this standard needs to have a maximum design temperature not exceeding 150 °C and a maximum design pressure not exceeding 160 bar. Outside of these limits, EN 13480 should be used for the design construction and inspection of the piping. Under these circumstances, the unique nature of a refrigerating plant, as indicated in the introduction of prEN 14276-1, needs also to be taken into account.
1.7   This European Standard applies to piping where the main pressure bearing parts are manufactured from metallic ductile materials as defined in Clause 4 and in prEN 14276-1.

This European Standard specifies the requirements for material, design, manufacturing, testing and documentation for stationary pressure vessels intended for use in refrigerating systems and heat pumps. These systems are referenced in this standard as refrigerating systems as defined in EN 378-1.
This European Standard applies to vessels, including welded or brazed attachments up to and including the nozzle flanges, screwed, welded or brazed connectors, or to the edge to be welded or brazed at the first circumferential joint connecting piping or other elements.
This European Standard applies to pressure vessels with an internal pressure down to – 1 bar, to account for the evacuation of the vessel prior to charging with refrigerant.
This European Standard applies to both the mechanical loading conditions and thermal conditions as defined in EN 13445-3 associated with refrigerating systems. It applies to pressure vessels subject to the maximum allowable temperatures for which nominal design stresses for materials are derived using EN 13445-2 and EN 13445-3 or as specified in this standard. In addition, vessels designed to this standard should have a maximum allowable temperature not exceeding 150 °C and a maximum design pressure not exceeding 160 bars. Outside of these limits, it is important that EN 13445 be used for the design, construction and inspection of the vessel. Under these circumstances, it is important that the unique nature of refrigerating plant, as indicated in the introduction to this standard, also be taken into account.
It is important that pressure vessels used in refrigerating systems and heat pumps of category less than II as de-fined in Annex H comply with other relevant clauses of EN 378-2 for vessels.
This European Standard applies to pressure vessels where the main pressure bearing parts are manufactured from metallic ductile materials as defined in Clause 4 and Annex I of this standard.
This European Standard does not apply to vessels of the following types:
-   vessels of riveted construction;
-   multi-layered, autofrettaged or prestressed vessels;
-   vessels directly heated by a flame;
-   « roll bond » heat exchangers.

This European Standard is intended to describe the qualification procedure for type approval of the tightness of hermetically sealed and closed components, joints and parts used in refrigerating systems and heat pumps as described in EN 378. The sealed and closed components, joints and parts concerned are, in particular, fittings, bursting discs, flanged or fitted assemblies. The tightness of flexible piping made from non-metallic materials is dealt with in EN 1736. Metal flexible piping are covered by this standard.
The requirements contained in this document are applicable to joints of maximum DN 50 and components of internal volume of maximum 5 l and maximum weight of 50 kg.
This document is intended to characterise their tightness stresses met during their operations, following the fitting procedure specified by the manufacturer, and to specify the minimal list of necessary information to be provided by the supplier of a component to the person in charge of carrying out this procedure.
It specifies the level of tightness of the component, as a whole, and its assembly as specified by its manufacturer.
It applies to the hermetically sealed and closed components, joints and parts used in the refrigerating installations, including those with seals, whatever their material and their design are.
This European Standard specifies additional requirements for mechanical joints that can be recognised as hermetically sealed joints.

This European Standard specifies the requirements for the safety of persons and property, provides guidance for the protection of the environment and establishes procedures for the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigerating systems and the recovery of refrigerants.
This Part 2 of this Standard is applicable to the design, construction and installation of refrigerating systems including piping, components and materials and including ancillary equipment directly associated with such systems which are not covered in EN 378-1, EN 378-3 or EN 378-4.  It also specifies requirements for testing, commissioning, marking and documentation. Requirements for secondary heat transfer circuits are excluded except for any safety devices associated with the refrigerating system.  Ancillary equipment includes, for example, fans, fan motors, electrical motors and transmission assemblies for open compressor systems.
The term "refrigerating system" used in this European Standard includes heat pumps.
The standard applies:
a)   to refrigerating systems, stationary or mobile, of all sizes, except to road vehicle air conditioners covered by specific product standards such as ISO/DIS 13043 and SAE J 639.;
b)   to secondary cooling or heating systems;
c)   to the location of the refrigerating systems; and
d)   to parts replaced and components added after adoption of this standard if they are not identical in function and capacity.
Systems using refrigerants other than those listed in Annex E of EN 378-1 are not covered by this standard unless they have been assigned to a safety class according to ISO 817.
