Page 3EN 12735-2:2001ForewordThis European Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 133 "Copper and copper alloys", thesecretariat of which is held by DIN.This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text orby endorsement, at the latest by October 2001, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latestby October 2001.Within its prgramme of work, Technical Committee CEN/TC 133 requested CEN/TC 133/WG 3.1 "Copper tubes" toprepare the following standard:EN 12735-2,
Copper and copper alloys — Seamless, round copper tubes for air conditioning andrefrigeration — Part 2: Tubes for equipment. This European Standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and theEuropean Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s).For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative Annex ZA, which is an integral part of this standard. The attention of the user of this standard is drawn to the fact that national or local regulations or practices mightrestrict the choice of dimensions and tempers in the application of products conforming to this standard. This is one of a series of European Standards for copper and copper alloy tubes. Other products are specified asfollows:EN 1057,
Copper and copper alloys — Seamless, round copper tubes for water and gas in sanitary and heatingapplications. EN 12449,

Page 4EN 12735-2:2001IntroductionIt is recommended that tubes manufactured to this standard are certified as conforming to the requirements of thisstandard based on continuing surveillance which should be coupled with an assessment of a supplier's qualitymanagement system against EN ISO 9001.1
ScopeThis European Standard specifies the requirements, sampling, test methods and conditions of delivery for seamlessround copper tubes, smooth or inner grooved, used for heat exchangers and their internal connecting pipes in themanufacturing of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.2
Normative referencesThis European Standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. Thesenormative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text and the publications are listed hereafter. Fordated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this EuropeanStandard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references, the latest edition of thepublication referred to applies (including amendments).EN 1655, Copper and copper alloys — Declarations of conformity.EN 1971, Copper and copper alloys — Eddy current test for tubes. Informative references to documents used in the preparation of this standard, and cited at the appropriate places in thetext, are listed in the bibliography.3
Terms and definitionsFor the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:3.1 seamless round copper tubehollow semi-finished product, circular in cross-section, made of copper, having a uniform wall thickness, which at allstages of production has a continuous peripheryNOTE
The inner surface of the tube may be enhanced, for example by grooves.3.2 level wound coil (LWC)coil in which the turns are wound into layers parallel to the axis of the coil such that successive turns in a given layerare next to one another3.3

production batchdefinite quantity of products of the same form, the same temper and the same cross-sectional dimensions manufac-tured during the same production sequence under uniform conditions4 Designations4.1 Material4.1.1 GeneralThe material is designated either by symbol or number (see 6.1).4.1.2 SymbolThe material symbol designation is based on the designation system given in ISO 1190-1.NOTE
Although the material symbol designation used in this standard might be the same as that in other standards using thedesignation system given in ISO 1190-1, the detailed composition requirements are not necessarily the same.4.1.3 NumberThe material number designation is in accordance with the system given in EN 1412.4.2
TemperFor the purposes of this standard, the following designation, which is in accordance with the system given inEN 1173, applies for the material temper (see Table 1):Y. Temper designated by the minimum value of 0,2% proof strength requirement for the product with mandatory0,2% proof strength, tensile strength, elongation and grain size requirements.4.3
ProductThe product designation provides a standardized pattern of designation from which a rapid and unequivocaldescription of a product is conveyed in communication. It provides mutual comprehension at the international levelwith regard to products which meet the requirements of the relevant European Standard. The product designation is no substitute for the full content of the standard. The product designation for products to this standard shall consist of:–denomination (Copper tube);–number of this European Standard (EN 12735-2);–temper designation (see Table 1);–nominal cross-sectional dimensions: outside diameter × wall thickness (see Tables 2 and 7);–inner surface type (the following designations shall be used as appropriate: S for smooth, G for inner grooved). The derivation of a product designation is shown in the following example.

Dimensions and tolerances for smooth tubes6.3.1
GeneralThe geometrical properties of the tubes are defined by outside diameter, wall thickness and for straight lengths, alsoby length.NOTE
For reference purposes, if DN designation of size for components of a pipework system is required, it can be calculatedfor tubes to this standard by: Nominal outside diameter (d) – 2 × nominal wall thickness (e) DN is defined as a dimensionless whole number which is indirectly related to the physical size, in millimetres, of the bore oroutside diameter of the end connections. In cases of dispute, the dimensions shall be measured at a temperature of (23 ± 5) °C.
