This European Standard specifies a procedure for the eddy current test with an encircling test coil for measuring defects on the outer surface of seamless round copper and copper alloy tubes. The eddy current test method(s) required, together with the size range and acceptance level, are defined in the relevant product standard. The choice of the method for eddy current test:
- with an encircling test coil on the outer surface according EN 1971-1; or
- with an internal test coil on the inner surface according EN 1971-2;
is at the discretion of the manufacturer if there are no other agreements between the purchaser and the supplier.

Dieser Teil der Europäischen Norm legt ein Verfahren für die Wirbelstromprüfung von nahtlosen runden Rohren aus Kupfer und Kupferlegierungen mit umfassender Spule auf der Außenseite fest. ANMERKUNG Das(Die) geforderte(n) Wirbelstromprüfverfahren sowie der Maßbereich und die Sortiergrenze sind in der entsprechenden Produktnorm festgelegt. Die Wahl des Verfahrens für die Wirbelstromprüfung mit  umfassender Spule auf der Außenseite nach EN 1971-1; oder  Innensonde auf der Innenseite nach EN 1971-2; obliegt dem Hersteller, wenn keine anderen Vereinbarungen zwischen Hersteller und Lieferer getroffen wurden.

La présente partie de cette Norme européenne spécifie un mode opératoire relatif au contrôle par courants de
Foucault pour le mesurage des défauts présents sur la paroi externe des tubes ronds sans soudure en cuivre
et alliages de cuivre, au moyen d’une bobine encerclante.
NOTE La ou les méthode(s) de contrôle par courants de Foucault requise(s), ainsi que les gammes de dimensions
concernées et le niveau d'acceptation, sont spécifiés dans la norme de produit correspondante.
Le choix de la méthode de contrôle par courants de Foucault :
- avec une bobine encerclante sur la paroi externe selon l’EN 1971-1 ;
ou
- avec un capteur interne sur la paroi interne selon l’EN 1971-2 ;
est laissé à la discrétion du fabricant, sauf accord contraire entre le client et le fournisseur.

Zahtevane metode preskušanja z vrtinčnimi tokovi ter razpon velikosti in meja sprejemljivosti so določeni v ustreznem standardu za izdelek. Metodo za preskušanje z vrtinčnimi tokovi:
– s preskusno tuljavo, ki obdaja zunanjo površino, v skladu s standardom EN 1971-1; ali
– z notranjo preskusno tuljavo ob notranji površini v skladu s standardom EN 1971-2;
izbere proizvajalec, če ne obstaja drugačen dogovor med kupcem in dobaviteljem.

This is one of two parts of the standard for the eddy current test for measuring defects on seamless round
copper and copper alloy tubes. The other part is:
EN 1971-2, Copper and copper alloys — Eddy current test for measuring defects on seamless round copper
and copper alloy tubes — Part 2: Test with an internal probe on the inner surface
In comparison with the first edition of EN 1971:1998, the following significant technical changes were made:
 split of and extension in two parts;
 modification of Scope – introduction of the choice of test method with encircling coil or internal probe.

Introduction
The eddy current test described in this European Standard has the objective of detecting during production
potential leaks and serious defects in seamless round copper and copper alloy tubes.
The eddy current test is able to detect material inhomogeneities and their positions throughout the length of
tubes. The eddy current signals of material inhomogeneities are compared with reference signals of artificially
produced test defects. It is possible to identify these inhomogeneities on the inner and outer surfaces as well
as within the tube wall.
