FOREWORD
I) The formal decisions or agreements of the I EC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on which all the National
Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion
on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for inte rnational use and they are accepted by the National Committees in that
sense.

3) In order to promote inte
the I EC recommendation for their national rules in so far as national conditions will permit. Any divergence between the I E C
recommendation and the corresponding national rules should, as far as possible, be clearly indicated in the latter.
4) The I E C has not laid down any procedure concerning marking as an indication of approval and has no responsibility when an
item of equipment is declared to comply with one of its recommendations.

This Part 7 of I EC Publication 94 shall be used in conjunction with the fourth edition (1981) of

Publication 94-1: Magnetic Tape Sound Recording and Reproducing Systems, Pa
tions and Requirements.
rt correspond to those in I EC Publication 94-1 and any text given in this
The clause numbers in this pa
rt shall modify the text given in I EC Publication 94-1. Absence of text in this part indicates that the
pa
provisions of the relevant clause in I EC Publication 94-1 apply.
SECTION ONE — GENERAL
1. Scope
This part applies only to cassette recording and reproducing systems.
SECTION TWO — MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS
12. Replacement:
tte recording systems
Mechanical requirements and dimensions of casse
Constructional data which standardize the cassette to secure interchangeability of cassettes on
any cassette recorder or player are given in Figures 1 to 12, pages 16 to 24.
The X-, Y- and Z-reference planes in the figures have been defined as follows:
The Z-reference plane is the plane established by three points which are positioned half of the
distance between three reference areas U, V and W on one cassette side and three correspond-
ing ones on the other side (see Figure 9, page 22).
The X-reference plane per cassette side is defined as the common tangential plane at the rear
of both positioning holes per side, perpendicular to the Z-reference plane.
The Y-reference plane is defined perpendicular to the relevant X - and the Z-reference plane
and is situated at the mid-point of the centres of the reference holes (see Section D-D in
Figure 2, page 17).
These definitions show that a cassette can fulfil the dimensional requirements in this standard only on the
Note. —
basis of two X-reference planes and two Y-reference planes.
Furthermore, the following requirements shall apply:

94-7 ©
12.1 Label area
The label area shall not exceed the dimensions given in Figure 9, page 22. The maximum allow-
able depression in the thickness of the cassette in that area, measured including label is given for
each support plane.
Window (optional)
12.2
The maximum window area shall be in accordance with the dimensions given in Figure 10,
page 23. The maximum allowable increase in cassette thickness (required, for example, to accom-
modate marks indicating amount of wound and unwound tape) is given for each support plane.
12.3 Sensing holes
12.3.1 Erasure preventing sensing holes
When a break-out lug is removed erasure of the corresponding tracks is prevented. The relation-
ship between cassette sides, break-out lugs and tracks is given in Figure 11, page 24. The dimensions
of the lug holes are given in Figure 2, page 17.
However, it is not necessary that the lugs be attached as drawn, but only that the space between
lug and hole edges shall not exceed 1 mm. The lugs shall withstand a force of 3 N (about 300 g)
applied to point P in Figure 11.
12.3.2 Sensing holes for IEC type I tapes
Cassettes to be recorded and/or reproduced with time constants of 120 ps and 3 180 ps are only
provided with erasure preventing sensing holes.
12.3.3 Sensing holes for IEC type II and IEC type IV high resolution tapes
The holes next to the erasure preventing sensing holes serve to change the time constants of
120 ps to 70 ps (type II and type IV) and
