SIST EN 13402-3:2017

EN 13402-3:2017 (E) 4 Introduction Currently, across Europe, several different systems are used for the size designation and labelling of clothes. This is confusing for consumers and creates inefficiencies across the supply chain. The objective [intention] is to harmonize and simplify the size labelling of clothes for the benefit of consumers and the industry generally. In order to size mass-produced clothes, the body size of the intended wearer needs to be defined and identified. In order to communicate the size of a garment clearly and visibly, a pictogram is used together with body size ranges of the intended wearer. Within this document, the values and intervals are provided for reference purposes as examples of best practice and have been adjusted taking into account the latest sizing surveys carried out in Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Sweden. SIST EN 13402-3:2017

EN 13402-3:2017 (E) 5 1 Scope This European Standard describes a flexible sizing system based on body dimensions and the related size labelling information for consumers, by the use of a standard pictogram. Examples of labelling clothing with the standard pictogram (see EN 13402-1) are given in Clause 5 in this document. Examples of tables for body measurements and intervals are given in Annex A (informative) to be used for compiling garment sizes for men, women, boys, girls and infants. Garment dimensions are not contained in this document. 2 Normative references Not applicable. 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 primary dimension body measurement, in centimetres, that is used to designate the size of a garment for the consumer Note 1 to entry: Alternative measuring systems may replace metric system where relevant. [SOURCE: EN 13402-1:2001, 3.1, modified] 3.2 secondary dimension body measurement, in centimetres, or in the case of tights, body mass (kilograms) that may additionally be used in designating the size of a garment for the consumer Note 1 to entry: Alternative measuring systems may replace metric system where relevant. Note 2 to entry: Tights refers to pantyhose in EN 13402–1 and EN 13402–2. [SOURCE: EN 13402-1:2001, 3.2, modified] 3.3 cup size difference between bust girth and underbust girth 3.4 standard pictogram pictorial symbol used to indicate the position on the body of the relevant dimensions [SOURCE: EN 13402-1:2001, 3.3], modified] 3.5 interval difference between the values of two adjoining body measurements SIST EN 13402-3:2017

EN 13402-3:2017 (E) 6 3.6 range coverage of one size Note 1 to entry: For example, for a bust of 88 cm, the range within the size is 86 cm–90 cm with 4 cm intervals; and 87 cm–89 cm with 2 cm intervals. 3.7 letter size size which define two bust or chest sizes, i.e. two intervals Note 1 to entry: Measurements range expressed with letter(s). 3.8 size designation identification of the clothing size(s) by the means of alphanumeric characters 4 Measurements and intervals 4.1 General The body measurements and the intervals for primary dimensions for size designation (see EN 13402-2) are given for men, women, boys, girls and infants. In addition, the secondary dimensions (see EN 13402-2) are given with the possibilities for a country/company to apply when needed. The possibilities are shown in the tables horizontally for each primary dimension value and vertically for each secondary dimension value. The link between the primary and secondary dimensions is flexible in order to cover different target groups or specific morphological features of countries. Examples of measurements and intervals are given in the tables in Annex A (informative) in this document. Examples of pictograms to be used for labelling clothing (see EN 13402-1) are shown in Clause 5. 4.2 Intervals Intervals listed in the tables of Annex A define the differences between two adjoining body measurements. 4.3 Range Range is calculated by using one half plus or half minus the interval from the primary or secondary dimension measurement. If the interval is 1,5 cm or less no range will be shown in the pictogram. Note for odd numbers a gap between ranges can occur if whole numbers are used. If the interval is less than 2 cm no range will be shown in the pictogram, only the centre of the range will be shown. 4.4 Combination between primary and secondary dimensions The flexibility of the standard sizing system allows each country/company freely to combine different body dimensions according to its requirements.
To achieve flexibility, between the primary and secondary dimensions, examples of alternatives are defined in Annex A. SIST EN 13402-3:2017

EN 13402-3:2017 (E) 7 5 Information provided on clothing size with the standard pictogram 5.1 General This standard provides the flexibility to cover all body shapes and garment types. The pictogram should be labelled with size designation, primary/and or secondary dimensions. Companies create the pictogram from their own body measurement tables (see example tables in the Annex A). The information of size shall be provided at the point of sales with the standard pictogram or similar graphic image. Information related to the range(s) of body dimension(s) has to be provided. The point of sales covers stores, catalogue, websites etc. Size labelling may be provided by means of labels, hangtags, packaging, leaflets etc. When developing the standard pictogram for labelling clothing, decisions shall be taken in regards of: — size designation: is identified with primary and/or secondary measurements or letter size; — size range: dependent on the body measurement and the intervals. 5.2 Size labelling For size labelling, this document is based on the use of the standard pictogram (EN 13402-1). The principle of the determination of dimension range is based on the range of primary dimension and/or the range of the secondary dimension(s). 5.3 Size designation NOTE For size designation this information is placed above the pictogram as shown in Figure 1. 5.3.1 Letter size The letter size intervals are used for garments with high fit tolerances like knit wear, sportswear, etc. The meaning of letter size, are based on English language and will remain the same as definition through national translation. Countries/companies may choose which and how many letter sizes to use and the related size intervals (see example in Figure 2 b and 3 b). In A.2.5, Table A.24, A.25 shows example of range and intervals for upper body measurements. The meaning of the letter sizes is explained below in English (translated expression in national language): XXS Extra Extra Small XS Extra Small S Small M Medium L Large XL Extra Large XXL Extra Extra Large 3XL Extra Extra Extra Large NOTE 1 The letter size is based on primary and secondary dimensions. NOTE 2 The range could be extended beyond XXS and/or 3XL if desired. SIST EN 13402-3:2017

EN 13402-3:2017 (E) 8 5.3.2 Numeric size Primary body dimension is on the 1st position (see example in Figure 2 a, and 3 a). For men and women body height has to be defined in the 2nd position. The other secondary body dimension stands on the 3rd position (see example in Figure 2 c and 3 c). For lower body, hip is the primary body dimension and inside leg length is the secondary dimension is (see example in Figure 4). For whole body, the primary body dimension is the hip girth and the other secondary body dimensions are bust/chest girth, waist girth and the height dimension (see example in Figure 5). For children, body height remains always on the 1st position. Secondary dimension follows on 2nd and 3rd position (see example Figure 6 and 7). The body dimensions are to be separated with a slash. (informative)
Examples of measurement and interval tables A.1 General Examples of body measurements and their intervals for primary dimensions for size designation (see EN 13402-2) are given for men, women, boys, girls and infants. In addition, the secondary dimensions (see EN 13402-2) are given with the possibilities for a country/company to apply when needed. The possibilities are shown in the tables horizontally for each primary dimension value and vertically for each secondary dimension value. The arrows at the beginning and at the end of the table range indicate that other values are possible to increase or decrease the range. The arrows in the left frame column of the tables, indicate if other values are possible to increase or decrease the intervals up or down. Intervals between sizes can be linear, proportional or irregular. Range is recommended for use on the pictogram as described in Clause 5. Each country/company chooses to either follow below examples of tables with measurement and intervals, or build their own measurements tables as needed for their market. Using only the tables as a reference how to develop a measurement chart and specify it clearly to the end customer by adapting Clause 5 and labelling clothing with a standard pictogram.
