Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety -- Part 2-4: Particular requirements for spin extractors

This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following. This International Standard deals with the safety of - stand alone electric spin extractors, and - spin extractors incorporated in washing machines that have separate containers for washing and spin extraction for household and similar purposes that have a capacity not exceeding 10 kg of dry cloth and a drum peripheral speed not exceeding 50 m/s, their rated voltages being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as spin extractors intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms, and spin extractors for communal use in blocks of flats or in launderettes are within the scope of this standard. As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances which are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account - persons (including children) whose . physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or . lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction; - children playing with the appliance.

EN 60335-2-4:2010 - 4 - Endorsement notice The text of the International Standard IEC 60335-2-4:2008 was approved by CENELEC as a European Standard with agreed common modifications as given below. COMMON MODIFICATIONS 1 Scope p Replace by: This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following. This European Standard deals with the safety of
- stand alone electric spin extractors - spin extractors incorporated in washing machines that have separate containers for washing and spin extraction
for household and similar purposes that have a capacity not exceeding 10 kg of dry cloth and a drum peripheral speed not exceeding 50 m/s, their rated voltages being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as spin extractors intended to be used by laymen in shops, on farms, and for communal use in blocks of flats are within the scope of this standard. This standard deals with the common hazards presented by spin extractors that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, it does not take into account –- persons (including children) whose • physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or • lack of experience and knowledge
prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction, – children playing with the appliance. This standard does not apply to – spin extractors intended to be used in launderettes, – spin extractors intended exclusively for industrial purposes, – spin extractors intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas). NOTE 101
Attention is drawn to the fact that – for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary, – in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar authorities. 3 Definitions p Add: 3.Z101 spin extractor appliance having a water-extracting function by which water is removed from textiles by centrifugal force SIST EN 60335-2-4:2010

- 5 - EN 60335-2-4:2010 7 Marking and instructions p 7.12.1 Replace “lid” by “lid or door”. p 7.101 Replace “lid” by “lid or door” (two times). 15 Moisture resistance p 15.2 Add before the last paragraph:
For appliances having a working surface, the test is repeated with the appliance tilted at an angle of 2° in relation to the position of normal use in the direction which is likely to be the most unfavourable.
The lid of top loading appliances is considered as a working surface if it is flat enough to put something on. 18 Endurance p Replace by: This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following. Lid and door interlocks of spin extractors shall withstand the stresses to which they are subjected in normal use. Compliance is checked by the following test. The lid or door is opened as in normal use and the force applied to the handle or actuating means of the release mechanism is measured. The force required to close the lid or door is also measured. The lid or door is then subjected to 6 000 cycles of opening and closing. For the first 3 000 cycles, the spin extractor is supplied at rated voltage and operated so that the interlock mechanism is energized and de-energized each cycle. For the remaining 3 000 cycles, the spin extractor is not connected to the supply mains. If the interlock complies with EN 60730-2-12, the spin extractor
is not connected to the supply mains during this test. If the interlock operates more than once during normal operation, it is operated for this number of times during each cycle. Lids are opened each time by approximately 45° and doors by approximately 90°, the speed of opening being approximately 1,5 m/s. The force applied to open the lid or door is twice the measured opening force, with a minimum of 50 N and a maximum of 200 N. Doors are closed at a speed of approximately 1,5 m/s, the force applied being five times the measured closing force, with a minimum of 50 N and a maximum of 200 N. Lids are allowed to close under their own weight but if they fail to latch, a force of five times the measured closing force is applied, with a minimum of 50 N and a maximum of 200 N. After the tests, the interlock shall be fit for further use and compliance with the relevant requirements of 20.103 shall not be impaired. 20 Stability and mechanical hazards p 20.102 Replace the first paragraph by: It shall only be possible to energize the drum drive motor when the lid or door is in the closed position and locked. SIST EN 60335-2-4:2010

EN 60335-2-4:2010 - 6 - p 20.103 Replace by: 20.103 For appliances having a drum it shall not be possible to open the lid or door while the drum is in motion. Compliance is checked by inspection and by the following test. The appliance is supplied at rated voltage and operated empty. The force determined during the test of 22.101 with the lid or door interlocked is applied to the lid or door in an attempt to open it. It shall not be possible to open the lid or door while the drum is in motion. p 20.104 Delete 21 Mechanical strength p 21.101 Replace by: Lids or doors of appliances shall have adequate mechanical strength. Compliance is checked by the following test. Appliances with doors are positioned so that the door is in a horizontal plane.
A rubber hemisphere having a diameter of 70 mm and a hardness between 40 IRHD and 50 IRHD is fixed to a cylinder having a mass of 20 kg and dropped from a height of 100 mm onto the centre of the lid or door. The test is carried out three times, after which the lid or door shall not be damaged to the extent that moving parts become accessible. p 21.102 Replace “lid” by “lid or door” (two times). In the last paragraph, replace “to 20.104” by “to 20.103”. 24 Components p 24.1.4 Replace “lid” by “lid or door”. – 6 – 60335-2-4 © IEC:2008 INTRODUCTION It has been assumed in the drafting of this International Standard that the execution of its provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.
This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in normal use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal situations that can be expected in practice and takes into account the way in which electromagnetic phenomena can affect the safe operation of appliances. This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that there is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply mains. However, national wiring rules may differ. If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered by another part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant part 2 is applied to each function separately, as far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into account.
When a part 2 standard does not include additional requirements to cover hazards dealt with in Part 1, Part 1 applies.
NOTE 1 This means that the technical committees responsible for the part 2 standards have determined that it is not necessary to specify particular requirements for the appliance in question over and above the general requirements.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject. NOTE 2 Horizontal and generic standards covering a hazard are not applicable since they have been taken into consideration when developing the general and particular requirements for the IEC 60335 series of standards. For example, in the case of temperature requirements for surfaces on many appliances, generic standards, such as ISO 13732-1 for hot surfaces, are not applicable in addition to Part 1 or part 2 standards. An appliance that complies with the text of this standard will not necessarily be considered to comply with the safety principles of the standard if, when examined and tested, it is found to have other features which impair the level of safety covered by these requirements. An appliance employing materials or having forms of construction differing from those detailed in the requirements of this standard may be examined and tested according to the intent of the requirements and, if found to be substantially equivalent, may be considered to comply with the standard.
