Sound system equipment - Part 4: Microphones (IEC 60268-4:2018)

This part of IEC 60268 specifies methods of measurement for the electrical impedance,
sensitivity, directional response pattern, dynamic range and external influences of sound
system microphones, and also details the characteristics to be specified by the manufacturer.
It applies to sound system microphones for all applications for speech and music. It does not
apply to measurement microphones, but it does apply to each audio channel of microphones
having more than one channel, for example for stereo or similar use. It is also applicable to
flush-mounted microphones and to the analogue characteristics of microphones with digital
audio output.
For the purposes of this International Standard, a microphone includes all such devices as
transformers, pre-amplifiers, or other elements that form an integral part of the microphone,
up to the output terminals specified by the manufacturer.
The major characteristics of a microphone are considered in Clauses 6 to 21. Additional
characteristics are considered in Annex A and Annex C.
NOTE The characteristics specified in this document do not describe the subjective response of the microphone.
Further work is necessary to find new definitions and measurement procedures for a later introduction of objective
characteristics for at least some of the subjective descriptions used to describe microphone performance.

Dodatne značilnosti so obravnavane v dodatkih A in C.

181 FOREWORD
182 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
183 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
184 international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
185 this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
186 Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
187 Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
188 in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
189 governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
190 with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
191 agreement between the two organizations.
192 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
193 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
194 interested IEC National Committees.
195 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
196 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
197 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
198 misinterpretation by any end user.
199 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
200 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
201 between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
202 the latter.
203 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
204 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
205 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
206 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
207 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
208 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
209 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
210 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
211 Publications.
212 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
213 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
214 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of
215 patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
216 International Standard IEC 60268-4 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 100:
217 Audio, video and multimedia systems and equipment.
218 This sixth edition cancels and replaces the fifth edition published in 2014, and constitutes a
219 technical revision.
220 This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous
221 edition:
222 – Pop measurement replaced by former Annex
223 – new Annex D for noise measurements in digital domain
224 The text of this standard is based on the following documents:

226 Full information on the voting for the approval of this standard can be found in the report on
227 voting indicated in the above table.
228 This publication has been drafted in accordance with the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
229 A list of all parts of the IEC 60268 series, under the general title Sound system equipment,
230 can be found on the IEC website.
231 The committee has decided that the contents of this publication will remain unchanged until
232 the stability date indicated on the IEC web site under "http://webstore.iec.ch" in the data
233 related to the specific publication. At this date, the publication will be

244
245
246
247 1 Scope
248 This part of IEC 60268 specifies methods of measurement for the electrical impedance,
249 sensitivity, directional response pattern, dynamic range and external influences of sound
250 system microphones, and also details the characteristics to be specified by the manufacturer.
251 It applies to sound system microphones for all applications for speech and music. It does not
252 apply to measurement microphones, but it does apply to each audio channel of microphones
253 having more than one channel, for example for stereo or similar use. It is also applicable to
254 flush-mounted microphones and to the analogue characteristics of microphones with digital
255 audio output.
256 For the purposes of this International Standard, a microphone includes all such devices as
257 transformers, pre-amplifiers, or other elements that form an integral part of the microphone,
258 up to the output terminals specified by the manufacturer.
259 The major characteristics of a microphone are considered in Clauses 6 to 21. Additional
260 characteristics are considered in Annex A and Annex C.
261 NOTE The characteristics specified in this standard do not describe the subjective response of the microphone.
262 Further work is necessary to find new definitions and measurement procedures for a later introduction of objective
263 characteristics for at least some of the subjective de
