Timber structures - Test methods - Load bearing nails, screws, dowels and bolts

This European Standard specifies test methods for determining the strength and deformation characteristics of laterally loaded connections with nail, screws, dowels and bolts in load-bearing timber structures.
The methods assess connections with members of timber (solid timber or glued laminated timber) or wood-based products or metal plates (but not punched metal plate fasteners) in the combination proposed for use in service.
The methods are used to determine load-slip characteristics and maximum load of connections where various angles between the applied force and the timber grain direction, or the main direction of the wood-based products, respectively, are possible.

Holzbauwerke - Prüfverfahren - Tragende Nagelverbindungen

In dieser Europäischen Norm werden Prüfverfahren zur Bestimmung der Festigkeits- und Verformungs-eigenschaften von auf Abscheren belasteten Verbindungen mit Nägeln, Schrauben, Stabdübeln oder Bolzen in tragenden Holzbauwerken festgelegt.
Mit den Verfahren werden Verbindungen mit Holzteilen (Vollholz oder Brettschichtholz) oder Holzwerkstoffen oder Metallblechen (jedoch keine Nagelplatten) in der für die Anwendung vorgesehenen Kombination beurteilt.
Die Verfahren dienen zur Bestimmung des Last-Verschiebungsverhaltens und der Höchstlast von Verbindungen, wobei verschiedene Winkel zwischen der einwirkenden Last und der Faserrichtung des Holzes oder der entsprechenden Hauptrichtung von Holzwerkstoffen möglich sind.

La présente Norme européenne définit les méthodes d'essai permettant de déterminer les caractéristiques de
résistance et de déformation d'assemblages connectés latéralement par pointes, tire-fonds, broches et
boulons dans des structures porteuses en bois.
Les méthodes supposent l'assemblage d’éléments en bois (massif ou lamellé collé), en produits à base de
bois ou de plaques métalliques (à l'exception des connecteurs à plaque métallique emboutie) dans des
combinaisons correspondant à leur emploi en service.
Les méthodes sont utilisées pour déterminer les caractéristiques force-glissement ainsi que la charge
maximale des assemblages avec un angle quelconque entre la force appliquée et l'orientation des fibres du
bois ou de la direction principale des produits à base de bois.

EN 1380:2009 (E) 3 Foreword This document (EN 1380:2009) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 124 “Timber structures”, the secretariat of which is held by SFS. This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by October 2009, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by October 2009. This document supersedes EN 1380:1999. The first version of this European Standard was published in September 1999 and considered only connections with nails. When the product standard for dowel type fasteners EN 14592 became available the scope of EN 1380 was expanded. Therefore, this revised version covers dowel type fasteners as nails, screws, dowels and bolts. Connections with load bearing staples are considered in EN 1381:1999. width of member cross-section, in millimetres F load, in newtons t member thickness, in millimetres 5 Requirements 5.1 Timber The timber (solid timber or glued laminated timber) shall satisfy the requirements of EN 14080, EN 14081-1 and shall be selected in accordance with either of the methods given in EN 28970. For each test piece, the individual members to be joined shall be selected to ensure a test piece of balanced density. For a group of similar test pieces, separate planks shall be used for each test piece. NOTE The members should be free from major defects, which could lead to premature failure in the area away from the fasteners. 5.2 Wood-based products The specification of the wood based products shall be established.
