This part of EN ..... specifies a method of determining the ease of dispersion DH/PVC-P of pigments from the differences in colour strength on dispersing colouring materials under various conditions in plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-P) compounds. The method is appropriate for use with organic and inorganic colour pigments and for pigment preparations.

EN 13900-2:2003 (E)2ForewordThis document (EN 13900-2:2003) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 298, "Pigments andextenders", the secretariat of which is held by DIN.This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text orby endorsement, at the latest by August 2003, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest byAugust 2003.Annex A is informative.According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, the national standards organizations of the followingcountries are bound to implement this European Standard: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland,France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal,Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.SIST EN 13900-2:2003

EN 13900-2:2003 (E)31 ScopeThis part of this European Standard specifies a method of determining the colouristic properties of a test pigmentrelative to a standard, and the ease of dispersion DHPVC-P of pigments from the differences in colour strength ondispersing colouring materials under various conditions in plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-P) compounds. The method is appropriate for use with organic and inorganic black and colour pigments and for pigmentpreparations. The ease of dispersion determined in this way is valid only for the dispersion equipment, dispersion conditions anddispersion medium being used. The use of test conditions differing from those specified may give different results;this applies both to the absolute magnitude and to the relation between values of the ease of dispersion of variouspigments. The subscript DHPVC-P is therefore used to designate the value obtained as specified in this part of thisEuropean Standard. The principle of this standard may also be used for routine quality control purposes by reference to the photometricdata generated from the sheets milled at 130 °C. For quality control purposes, the ratio of pigment to TiO2 may beagreed between the interested parties. Ratios of 1:10 for organic pigments and 0,2 to 0,5:1 for inorganic pigmentsare suggested as convenient and widely used standard ratios.Annex A is informative and gives a description of a suitable basic compound.2 Normative referencesThis European Standard incorporates by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. Thesenormative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text, and the publications are listed hereafter. Fordated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this EuropeanStandard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references the latest edition of thepublication referred to applies (including amendments).EN 12877-1, Colouring materials in plastics - Determination of colour stability to heat during processing of colouringmaterials in plastics - Part 1: General introduction.EN ISO 787-24:1995, General method of tests for pigments and extenders - Part 24: Determination of relativetinting strength of coloured pigments and relative scattering power of white pigments - Photometric methods (ISO787-24:1985).EN ISO 15528, Paints, varnishes and raw materials for paints and varnishes - Sampling (ISO 15528:2000).ISO 7724-2:1984, Paints and varnishes – Colorimetry - Part 2: Colour measurement.3 Term and definitionFor the purposes of this European Standard the following term and definition applies.3.1ease of dispersion [DHPVC-P]measure of the rate at which or the degree to which a pigment or extender achieves a given level of dispersionwhen dispersed in a plastics material. The DHPVC-P is derived from the increase in colour strength achieved by two-roll milling as specified in 8.2, relative to the colour strength achieved as specified in 8.14 PrincipleUsing a two-roll mill, the pigment under test is dispersed at 160 °C ± 5 °C in the basic compound. The milled sheetobtained in this way is then subjected to the higher shearing forces resulting from two-roll milling at 130 °C ± 5 °C.The resulting increase in colour strength is a measure of the ease of dispersion DHPVC-P.SIST EN 13900-2:2003

EN 13900-2:2003 (E)45 MaterialA suitable and recommended basic compound is described in annex A. An alternative compound may be agreedbetween the interested parties and is to be mentioned in the test report. The quantity of the pigment used shall be such that a depth of shade (see EN 12877-1) of approximately 1/25 SDis achieved.6 Apparatus6.1 Two-roll millEquipped with heating facilities and having rollers adjustable for spacing. The roll diameter shall be between80 mm and 200 mm, and the ratio of the speeds of rotation of the two rollers shall be between 1:1,1 and 1:1,2.NOTEIt has been found that comparable results on different two-roll mills will be obtained under the following conditions¾ ratio of roller diameters of the two machines: between 1:1 and 1:1,5,¾ ratio of peripheral speeds: between 1:1 and 1:1,1,¾ Hk (bank)
to Hs (gap width) should be Hk /Hs
³ 20.If smaller roller sets are used (roller diameter e.g. 80 mm), the settings of the thickness of the milled sheet from 0,4 mm to0,5 mm with the recommended conditions of similarity can lead to difficulties with regard to the requirement for a rolling bank.6.2 Plate pressProvided with heating facilities and, advantageously, with cooling facilities as well.6.3 Photometer7 SamplingRepresentative samples of the colouring materials to be tested shall be taken as described in EN ISO 15528.8 Procedure8.1 Milling at 160 °C ± 5 °CThe mixture consisting of the pigment under test and the basic compound shall be processed to produce a milledsheet. A test specimen having dimensions of 1 mm by at least 50 mm ´ 50 mm shall be produced from a portion ofthe milled sheet.NOTEIn this method increased shear is obtained by milling the reference sheet at a lower temperature of 130 °C, as aresult of which the wetting-out properties of the PVC-P compound
