INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION
METHODS OF MEASURING THE CHARACTERISTICS
OF REPRODUCING EQUIPMENT
FOR DIGITAL AUDIO COMPACT DISCS
FOREWORD
The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
1)
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
2)
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical
3)
reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
4)
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
International Standard IEC 1096 has been prepared by sub-committee 60A: Sound
recording, of IEC technical committee 60: Recording.
The text of this standard is based on the following documents:

METHODS OF MEASURING THE CHARACTERISTICS
OF REPRODUCING EQUIPMENT
FOR DIGITAL AUDIO COMPACT DISCS
1 Scope and object
This International Standard applies to reproducing equipment for digital audio compact
discs that conform to the specifications of IEC 908.
NOTES
For convenience, this reproducing equipment will be referred to as a "CD player" throughout the text of
1
this standard.
This standard does not include specifications for listening tests (see IEC 268-13).
2
The object of this standard is to list and define the characteristics affecting the perform-
ance of CD players, to establish conditions and methods of measurement of those
characteristics, and to standardize the presentation of results.
2 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this
text, constitute provisions of this International Standard. At the time of publication, the edi-
rties to
tions indicated were valid. All normative documents are subject to revision, and pa
agreement based on this International Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibil-
ity of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. Mem-
bers of ISO and IEC maintain registers of currently valid International Standards.

3 Terminology
Each parameter to be measured is defined in the relevant clause pertaining to measure-
ment (see clause 5). For this International Standard, the following definitions apply.
The specified value of any given parameter selected as a
3.1 reference value:
reference to which other values are compared.
The level of a sinusoidal analogue signal, whose peak
3.2 reference recorded level:
voltage corresponds to the full-scale digital coding level, represented by (7FFF)H and
(8000)H in 2's complement form, is specified as 0 dB in this standard.
reference frequency: In this standard the reference frequency is 1 kHz.
3.3
The voltage that appears across the rated load imped-
3.4 reference output voltage:
ance when reproducing reference recorded level at reference frequency.
4 Information required from manufacturers of CD players
This information falls into two distinct categories:
mandatory information which shall be clearly shown on the CD player. This require-
a)
ment is indicated by the letter "A" on the right-hand side of the page;
optional information which may be given separately, for example in an instruction
b)
manual relating to and supplied with the CD player.
It is essential that mandatory information outside the scope of this standard be also given
in the correct location as specified in the relevant standard (e.g. for aspects of safety,
see IEC 65).

4.2 Standard conditions for measurements
For convenience in specifying how CD players are to be set up for measurement or verifi-
cation, it is necessary to define certain conditions under which the measurements shall be
made. Furthermore, these conditions shall be related to specific test discs, chosen from
the discs listed in annex A.
The following parameters are basic to the methods of measurement specified in this
standard:

For the guidance of CD player manufacturers, preferred values or ranges are given in
square brackets following each parameter listed below:

The test disc used in the measurement should be chosen from the discs listed in annex A.
4.3 Performance claims
The performance claims shall be based on the CD player operating under the conditions
specified in subclause 4.2. Unless otherwise specified in 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 (for example
maximum or minimum values), a tolerance shall be allocated to each parameter.

In case the manufacturer claims power supply voltage tolerances exceeding ±10 %, the
characteristics to be specified shall also be stated for the upper and lower limits of these
tolerances.
If variations in the frequency of the power supply, within the tolerances specified by the
manufacturer, have any significant influence on the characteristics to be specified, these
characteristics shall also be stated for the upper and lower limits of the claimed frequency
tolerances.
If harmonics in the a.c. power supply or ripple in the d.c. power supply, within the limits
specified by the manufacturer, have any significant influence on the characteristics to be
specified, those characteristics shall also be stated for the upper limit of the claimed toler-
ances of harmonic or ripple content.

4.4.1 Unless otherwise stated in the subclause pertaining to the relevant method of
measurement, the conditions specified in 4.2 shall apply.

equipment.
4.4.2 All measurements shall be made using specified test discs recorded without pre-
emphasis unless otherwise specified in the relevant method of measurement. Examples
are given in annex A.
4.4.3 The person who is doing the testing shall:
