EN 1201:2005 (E) 3 Foreword This document (EN 1201:2005) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 164 “Water supply”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR. This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by September 2005, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by September 2005. This document supersedes EN 1201:1997. 3.1.3 Relative molecular mass 136,0. 3.1.4 Empirical formula KH2PO4. 3.1.5 Chemical formula KH2PO4. 3.1.6 CAS Registry Number 3) 7778-77-0. 3.1.7 EINECS reference 2) 231-913-4. 3.2 Commercial form The potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate is available in a number of different forms (see 3.3.1). Different commercial forms, solids or dissolved in water are possible. All concentrations mentioned refer to the active matter and shall be calculated accordingly. NOTE Potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate can be a component of mixtures sold for water treatment purposes. 3.3 Physical properties 3.3.1 Appearence Solid : The product is a white powder, granules or crystals. Liquid : The product is a clear solution. 3.3.2 Density Solid : The bulk density of the product varies from 500 g/dm3 to 1 100 g/dm3. Liquid : The density of solution is 1,036 g/ml for a product concentration of 50 g/l at 20 °C. 3.3.3 Solubility in water The solubility is water is approximately 220 g/l at 25 °C.

The pH value of a solution
of a mass fraction of 1 % is approximately 4,5. 4 Purity criteria 4.1 General This document specifies the minimum purity requirements for potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate used for the treatment of water intended for human consumption. Limits are given for impurities commonly present in the product. Depending on the raw materials and the manufacturing process other impurities may be present and, if so, this shall be notified to the user and when necessary to relevant authorities. NOTE Users of this product should check the national regulations in order to clarify whether it is of appropriate purity for treatment of water intended for human consumption, taking into account raw water quality, required dosage, contents of other impurities and additives used in the products not stated in this document.

EN 1201:2005 (E) 8 Limits have been given for impurities and chemical parameters where these are likely to be present in significant quantities from the current production process and raw materials. If the production process or raw materials lead to significant quantities of impurities, by-products, or additives being present, this shall be notified to the user. 4.2 Composition of commercial product The product shall conform to the following requirements on a dry mass basis:  phosphate content expressed as P2O5 :mass fraction of (52 ± 1,0) %;  potassium content expressed as K2O :mass fraction of (34 ± 1,0) %. 4.3 Impurities and main by-products The product shall conform to the requirements specified in Table 1.
